County Commission giving $5 million to MC in latest allocation.

Montgomery County Allocates $5 Million in Emergency Funding for Developmental Disabilities Services

The Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities Services (MCBDDS) is facing a financial crisis, prompting the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) to allocate $5 million from the Human Services Levy to provide vital assistance for residents with developmental disabilities.

Commission President Debbie Lieberman emphasized the importance of the services provided by MCBDDS, stating that these critical services are essential for residents to live fulfilling lives and reach their full potential.

Earlier this week, the MCBDDS Board announced layoffs and service suspensions to address an $8.9 million budget shortfall. The rising costs of services and Medicaid waiver service increases have put a strain on the organization’s resources.

The BCC has previously provided $17 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to support MCBDDS. The recent $5 million emergency funding will help bridge the financial gap and support the organization in transitioning services to alternative means and providers.

Despite the challenges, MCBDDS Superintendent and CEO Pamela Combs expressed gratitude for the support from the BCC and the Levy Council, highlighting the importance of these services for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Key Points:

  • Montgomery County allocates $5 million in emergency funding for MCBDDS
  • BCC has previously provided $17 million in ARPA funding to support MCBDDS
  • The funding will help sustain critical services for residents with developmental disabilities
  • MCBDDS faces financial challenges due to rising costs and Medicaid waiver service increases
  • The support from the BCC and Levy Council is crucial for maintaining essential community supports

Summary:

Montgomery County is taking proactive measures to address the financial crisis facing the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities Services (MCBDDS). By allocating $5 million in emergency funding from the Human Services Levy, the County aims to support vital services for residents with developmental disabilities. The support from the Board of County Commissioners and the Levy Council is crucial in ensuring that individuals with developmental disabilities receive the care and assistance they need to live fulfilling lives.
