Edgewood Locals Voice Concerns Over Proposed Intersection Overhaul

A packed room of concerned Edgewood residents gathered on Tuesday to address Kenton County School District representatives, city officials, and engineers about a proposed project to revamp a problematic intersection in front of RC Hinsdale Elementary. The collaboration between the city and the school district aims to enhance safety and traffic flow in the area by adding parking spaces to the school and realigning Dudley Road with Charter Oak Road at Tupman Drive.

Toan Nguyen, a frequent cyclist in the area, expressed his excitement over the potential upgrades to the intersection, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of children who commute to school daily. With heavy traffic in the vicinity, Nguyen highlighted the need for measures to prevent reckless driving and prioritize the well-being of pedestrians and cyclists.

Matt Rigg, Chief Operations Officer of Kenton County Schools, credited the recent land acquisitions around the school for enabling the district to propose the joint construction venture with the city. The addition of parking lots and improved traffic flow on Dudley Road during school hours could alleviate congestion and enhance safety for students and commuters alike.

City Manager Brian Dehner outlined the details of the $1.2 to $1.5 million project, which includes the addition of turn lanes, sidewalk relocations, and a four-side crosswalk to replace the current confusing layout. Dehner also emphasized the need to address recurring incidents of vehicles colliding with guardrails in the area, underscoring the urgency of implementing the proposed changes.

Pending approval, construction on the intersection overhaul is projected to commence in October, with an anticipated completion date set for Fall 2025. The proposed enhancements aim to streamline traffic, improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and enhance the overall functionality of the intersection for the benefit of the local community.
